I really enjoyed the visit to a charming small city, Skalica, in northwest Slovakia, close to the Czech border. Despite the high temperature, walking in the center and outside it was really nice. During the wandering, I saw so many interesting corners, an ice-cream shop with lots of different flavours, inclusively. I am crazy for ice-creams and there was not a single day without having two or three balls. I think I tried every flavour available. All were fabulous. Anywhere, either in Bratislava or in a small town, we can easily find an ice-cream shop. But, ice-cream was not the only thing I liked about Skalica.
I was impressed by the unique city square or, rather, triangle, and its three architectural relics: the Slovak House that is characterised by its decorative faƧade with several colourful mosaics depicting Slovakia's national life. Actually, a beautiful adornment of the whole square. Right next to the Parish Church, the XIV century St. Anne Ossuary catches anyone's eyes.
Perhaps because of the hot weather, I saw few people in the city, apart from some participants in a 'night monsters' event that began on the square and would end at the so-called Rotunda of St. George, where I met two young ladies wearing spooky costumes.
After an early dinner, walking through those silent cobblestone streets up to the Rotunda hill was good for diggestion and a pleasure to my eyes: the city's several churches were visible and so were the red-tiled roofs of the Old Town buildings...Beautiful!
Next to the Rotunda of St. George, I saw part of the remains of the city walls, while on a slope and across a ditch, on a small hill, there was a Classicistic Calvary.
The sun was about to set but there was still time to pay a quick visit to Holic town and take some photos of its castle, one of those Slovakian castles that survived until today. However, it doesn't show its original medieval architecture. Holic Castle is a 'water' castle that long hosted the Habsburgs during summertime. It's now listed as a national cultural heritage site.
Enjoy the slide-show.... Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Belita!! I really enjoyed this part of your tour, my favourite so far. Skalica is such a beautiful and colourful place, and also so clean and tidy. Some lovely old buildings. That 'night-monsters' event looks like fun. I agree with you in the ice-creams...they all look delicious!! And we even get to see you in a couple of your photos, too!!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I posted some dragonfly shots yesterday, if you are interested in a look.
I agree with your words, Mitch! This post is also my favourite so far. Skalica was impressive to me in several aspects. The Mayor must be a good element of the local government....
DeleteAs soon as I have time I want to have a loooong look at your beautiful shots of your trip!
ReplyDeleteThanx for sharing :)
Thanks for your quick visit, anyway. Any time you're welcome to 'stay' longer...
DeleteSo I stayed in your site for some time and I saw all 3 series :)
DeleteWhat a wonderful holiday Belita!
I do like those colorful roofs.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your lovely trip with us. :)
Hi Belita,
ReplyDeleteThis has to be one of my favorite tours. I enjoyed viewing Skalica with all of its red tiled roofs and intricate patterns on its buildings. It seems so amazingly clean. You always capture the color of any place that you travel to. What is an extra here is that you included yourself in some of the photos.
what a peaceful place to just wander through the streets and town, You look so lovely! Everything is clean and [mostly empty ~ where is everybody?] ~ nice buildings and that cloud reflection is great!! In the heat, I would bet the ice creams would be very popular, lol..... thank you for taking me somewhere totally new this trip!
