TIME TO DANCE, SING, EAT AND DRINK....

The feast of Saint Anthony festival (12 to 13 June) is celebrated throughout Lisbon, notably in the Mouraria and Alfama districts and on the Main Street where there is a huge parade. The festival consists of singing and dancing, food and drink with the locals putting up lanterns and streamers in the streets. Fado music can be heard throughout the city and grilled sardines are eaten in huge quantities. During this festival it is a tradition to offer a small pot of basil to loved ones. Each pot has also a paper-made carnation with a love poem attached. If a woman receives one of these it means she will be the giver's next lover.

ENJOY!

  1. What a wonderful, colourful festival!! I really enjoyed your photos!! As always, you captured the people so well. I loved that one girl's really colourful dress. Another girl, you captured her beautiful dark eyes so well. I had to smile at the man wearing the 'sardine hat'. And the food......it all looked so delicious!!! And of course.....the beer looked good too!!

    1. Thanks, Mitch! The sardine hats were giveaways by a Portuguese brewery company that sponsored the festival. That girl wearing a colourful dress was ready to go to the parade. She was an element of the group of that neighbourhood that would parade along the main street, late in the evening.
