Today, let's drop in to visit Alberobello, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site where we will find the highest concentration of trulli.
I tried to capture a bit of magic in this town. I hope you enjoy my photos.
The trulli (singular version: trullo) are dry mortarless stone huts built with conical tops. You see them throughout the Itria Valley in Puglia, but the greatest concentration is in Alberobello. Here’s the view from a lookout on the edge of the city centre.

Plenty of trulli have been converted into restaurants and guesthouses. Let's have lunch in one of them...
The city is celebrating its patron saints Cosmos and Damian. The non religious events include a street market selling from vegetables and fruit to hosiery ...
Does Domenico Modugno mean something to you? Most probably it's a singer's name familiar to some of you. Well, he was from Poligliano a Mare, a picturesque town. The statue of the famous "Volare" (also known as "Nel blu dipinto di blu")" singer/writer's arms outstretched stands at a square and it's very important to the local people.
From Poligliano a Mare we are going to stop at Monopoli, another picturesque town. Let's stay here until we see the full moon rising from the Adriatic Sea...
For further images of the day, hope you enjoy the slideshow...
It was good to have you together with me...
See you soon!
~~ Have a great rest of the week ~~

oh my goodness, so many wonderful photos! Those Trulli are amazing, I don't know how old they are [I don't imagine they build them anymore?] but they certainly can withstand the weather of the region. Those mortar-less slate roofs are works of art to me, it takes a lot of talent to balance the weights of those roofs. Interesting and protected beach area. But the wow moment was seeing how the town was built on the rocks, so close to the sea! Great shots, thanks for bringing me a new part of my unseen world! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Monica! Actually, they were awesome...rebuilt or not... I really liked looking at them. The small towns in that region were all very nice and though they had some similarities, each one had its own beauty.I didn't go to any beach as I am not very fond of sand, but I noticed it was not very fine. Amazing colour of the sea water..no idea about how cold or warm it was...

And then the town sitting on the cliff above the sea, that's spectacular too!! I really must visit this area some day. Many thanks for taking me on a splendid trip with your photos.
ReplyDeleteHi Mitch! I was always surrounded by so much beauty that the days passed much faster than I would have liked. Anyway, it was a nice journey - I will take you farther south and north up to Rome - and you will see further...
DeleteThanks for the visit!
Actually I was in Puglia only once, but I had the chance to visit Alberobello's trulli :)
ReplyDeleteBelita, your pics are great indeed!
Hi Edoardo! You're always very kind. I was impressed as I reached Alberobello but frankly it didn't make me be in awe... That happened when I visited Lecce, for instance...

The houses look a bit like mushrooms, but lovelier. The top shot I mean. Also I love the moon rise, magical. The whisp of cloud.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Benni! I have had the same opinion at the first sight...

Lots of terrific photos here, Isabel. My favourite was the picture of the pomegranates because I eat pomegranate every day with my breakfast. I'm thinking of having a look at that fruit and vegetable market near to Cais Sodre. I've never been there. Is it much cheaper to buy our fruit and vegetables there? Do you know the place I mean ? It's on the other side of the road to Cais do Sodre Railway Station. Kumar is now working up near to Almeirim. Do you know this place? Nearest big town is Santarem. He's working in agriculture and hating it but he needs a job. He'll be down to Lisbon in about ten days. I'm sure he'd love to see you while he's here. You've been a bit elusive recently and I guessed it was because you are writing lots of picture blogs about your trip to Italy. Isabel, I'm off to Kathmandu on 15th December but it's a short trip. I'll be arriving back in Lisbon on 26th December. I'll be spending my Christmas Day in an aeroplane and I hate that idea but those are the dates I could get at a sensible price.
