As I like traditional Portuguese food, whenever I visit Oporto I always try to have meals at restaurants that are well known for their typical dishes, regardless they are 'in' or not. Normally, those who are 'in' are out of my to-go list. They don't serve the dishes that make part of my childhood memories. Therefore, I didn't hesitate to have lunch at Ernesto, a restaurant that since it was founded (1936) has been beloved by the local residents.
After passing a small foyer I walked into a very welcoming dining room that displayed some works by local artists.
The menu recommended a variety of meat and fish dishes. My order of fish fillets were served accompanied by a side bowl with rice and red beans. All was properly cooked and home-style tasting and so was the crème brûlée for dessert.
For my curiosity I went upstairs and found another dining room from which I got into a terrace with a few tables. How enjoyable must it be having a meal over there on hot weather days....
A cage with a colourful pair of birds added an exotic touch to the ambience, while animals made out of stone decorated the terrace here and there.

I left this traditional family restaurant, with the belief that I would return there again...
