THE HIGHEST CITY IN PORTUGAL

My second house in which I have been living because of the pandemic situation in Lisbon is on a mountain called Estrela.

Since the begining of last month,  the nearest city from my place has been connected by railway with Guarda, the highest city in Portugal. Going on a train journey, even if for a very short time, always pleases me. So, last week I did it and reached my destination within one hour from the departure point. After lunch, I wandered through the city center and the Jewish quarter.
I was shocked as I saw the main streets almost empty of people. The capital city of the district looked like a ghost city. Perhaps its residents are fearful of going out because of Covid and its latest variants....
Its historic cathedral was closed, many restaurants were not open, stores with no potential buyers…. No summer cheer in the air… Oh my God, how sad!

This loom is used to weave very heavy wool blankets that are typical in this Region that reaches very low temperatures in winter.
Only a giant would buy such a huge-sized shoe....

The Jewish presence dates as far back as the 13th century and it's said to be one of the oldest and most important in the Region.

Anyway, I myself enjoyed spending the day over there. As many of you may already know, I like travelling alone, either I do it domestically or not. Therefore, I could make the most of the hours spent over there and returned back happy with my day’s outing.

~~ Thanks for stopping by ~~
