A PECULIAR BALCONY....

The balcony of someone who has walked the Way of Saint James.
On the right side, you see a scallop shell and a gourd hanging from
a Cross/Sword. These are traditional symbols of pilgrims
who walk towards the Galician city of
 Santiago de Compostela.

HITTING PEOPLE ON THE HEAD!!!

Tonight is the party celebration for Oporto's patron saint - São João - and the Mediterranean answer to midsummer parties. São João festival was built on the remnants of the pagan celebration of Summer solstice, which symbolised the abundance of crops and fertility, and thus inevitably connected to sun & fire worship.

Preparations begin several days in advance, with each neighbourhood dressing up with colourful decorations.

Offering friends potted basil decorated with handwritten poems is one of the traditions, and so is eating sardines and melon. Some pastry shops sell baked replicas of potted basil.

''Cascata” literally means cascade and, during São João festival, they are representations of variegated sceneries, often with water elements.  “Cascatas” traditionally reproduce typical places in Porto and painted clay figurines represent people, professions and animals.

Also for sale on street corners are long-stemmed, purple garlic flowers. People buy these to hit people on the head with and to wave in people’s faces, Everyone walks the streets armed with a plastic hammer that they use to hit their companions and random strangers on the head.

Fireworks, bonfires and launching hot air balloons make part of the celebrations of the most important night of the year in the city.

I wish a Very Happy São João to all my Porto friends.

Best wishes for a wonderful weekend to all the others who stop by.

THE FIRST MARRIAGE FOR LOVE WAS CELEBRATED HERE....

Today, let's visit the monastery where the first marriage for love among the Portuguese monarchy was celebrated. It's located at Leça do Balio, a small town in the vicinities of Oporto.
The Monastery is one of the perfect spots for a wedding ceremony, in the neighbouring areas of Oporto. Looking at the flower arrangements inside, I presume there had been one recently...

The Monastery for many centuries has played an important role in supporting  the pilgrims walking The Way, the name commonly given to the footpath to and from Santiago de Compostela (Spain). Nowadays, the Way is made up of a multitude of routes, out of which the Portuguese Coastal one is becoming popular year after year.

As a result, two months ago, a bureau that provides support to pilgrims (?), perhaps better calling them tourgrims, was inaugurated in a structure annex to the Monastery that had been the residence of a wealthy family.

As we step into the reception, we see a ceiling with a display of scallop shells - these are iconic symbols of the Way -,  together with others such as gourds and crooks (nowadays few walkers use these but hiking poles, instead)

A pilgrim having rest....

Time to wave farewell to the Monastery that for centuries had different purposes: the home of warrior monks, a hospital and a place for pilgrims to stay, as they were walking the Portuguese Way of St. James, which goes from the south of the Iberia Peninsula to Santiago. The red flags of the Order of Malta evoke the hospitality that in the past was believed  to be a primary duty of the monks.

REVIVING A CHILDHOOD MEMORY WITH....

When I was a child, every year by this time, I and each one of my siblings, two sisters and one brother, had a small cage made out of wood - plastic was not so common as nowadays - inside which there was a black cricket. We were very proud of our 'pets' and always discussing which cricket chirped the most beautiful 'song' of the four.
Of course, mine did!
At least I believed so...

A few days ago; I visited an open market and ... black crickets were there on sale.

Hardly could I believe that I was lucky enough to revive a childhood memory with.... a cricket!
Although he is not Romeo and I am not Juliet, either, late in the evening he starts singing beautiful serenades which take me back to when I was a child....
