PORTUGUESE STREET ARTIST TURNS JUNK INTO AMAZING RACCOON

Bordallo II (I was lucky. He allowed me to take a photo of him)

Talented Portuguese street artist Artur Bordalo (aka Bordalo II) has been in my neighbourhood, where he has just finished working on an impressive installation on a wall, out of metal scraps and trash. Named 'Big Raccoon', this is a beautiful mind-boggling installation.
His street art is unique because it looks as if it were three-dimensional and is presented in surprisingly tactile formations.

At an art gallery nearby, there is a parallel exhibition 'Panic, Drama, Terror' of some of his works, of much smaller sizes, yet they are interesting, too.

The Panic we may have of being what the society wants us to be, the Drama of a happy life be understood as if the more one owns the happier he is, and the Terror that is hidden behind the curtains of truth.

The raw-material for Bordallo's works is nothing else but the fruit of the unhealthy consumerism  - Junk / Waste.
Bordallo tries to create humour out from shameful events and give a new colour to the panic, to the drama and to the terror of the reality.

CREATIVE PORTUGUESE 'PLAYED' MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AS IF THESE WERE CANVASES...

The Cavaquinho is a musical instrument of Greek-Latin origin as all European chordophones, but it was from Minho (a northern region of Portugal) that the great journey set out...
The strength held by Brazil or Cape Verde in a world of music and of music of the world is inseparable from the acoustic presence of the Brazilian or Cape Verdean Cavaquinho, inheritors of the Portuguese instrument.

Also noteworthy is the fact that the ukelele from Hawaii, another successor of the cavaquinho, is presently a leading character of a powerful world music movement.

Seventy Portuguese artists made an artistic intervention on cavaquinhos and the result is an exhibition currently held at a Monastery, in Lisbon.

The seventy cavaquinhos that have been transformed into art objects use various materials and techniques. Among them, there are some that make direct reference to music, whereas others serve to make screen for a painting or collage on paper.

With Cavaquinho common denominator - as a physical support of the expressive power - the corner-stone of the exhibition does not stop on the decorative aspect of the instrument, aiming rather the creative signature of each artist.
